Haiti covers 27,750 square kilometres and is almost the same size as Belgium. It has about 9 million citizens. 


The larger part of the country is mountainous which is uninhabitable. This is why the urban places and cities are largely overpopulated. 


The capital is Port-au-Prince

Haiti was one of the wealthiest countries and it was given the name of ¨Pear of the Antilles¨. 


Now it is the poorest country of the western hemisphere 


70% of the population lives under the subsistence level, and the unemployment rate is 65%.


Only about 5% of the people live in luxury


Only 1 out of 5 children reaches the age of 5.
