OBJECTIVE A) Outline the different energy resources used by your country. Include a recent pie chart.

 Energy sources:

- 12.5% of 9 million people have access to electricity

- 70% was diesel oil - fired thermal

- 30% was hydroelectric (dependent on seasons)

SOURCES HAITI DOES NOT PRODUCE HOWEVER IT DID PRODUCE BEFORE, HOWEVER ALL THE RESOURCES WERE EXTRACTED WITH OUT BEING SUSTAINABLE.

- OIL

- NATURAL GAS

- COAL

- HAITI IS BEGINNING TO WORK MORE TOWARDS USING RENEWABLE AND REPLENISHABLE SOURCES SUCH AS THE WIND (Starting Wind Turbine Program) AND WATER IN ORDER TO RECEIVE ELECTRICITY

- AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE, HAITI HAD A DIFFICULT TIME IN RECOVERING AND THEY RECEIVED PETROLEUM AND OTHER NECESSARY RESOURCES FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT.

- RECEIVED FOREIGN HELP

* Now a days lots of studies have been made in Haiti and it has been concluded that the best energy source for Haiti is natural gas, but liquified natural gas since it will be durable and efficient for this countries necessities.

* Over the last 100 years or more, Haiti has only worried on the present, however now foreign organizations are cooperating in order to give Haiti energy that would last a long time, considering not only the present, but the future as well.

OBJECTIVE C: Discuss the factors that affect the choice of energy sources adopted by your society

- Since only 12.5% of 9 million people have access to electricity, then there are only two energy sources which are: diesel oil and hydroelectric power.

- The transportation and communication systems in this country are weak due to the lack of resources and capability of the people in charge of these systems.

- It is an LEDC, therefore Haiti has low economical resources in order to invest in maintenance of the energy sources, therefore these systems are old and not innovative.

- There are 3 main hydroelectric plants in all the country, and then small ones all around. However this is enough since such a small group of people actually have access to this.

- The hydroelectric plants depend mostly on the seasons, and on the dry seasons this system does not work as well.

- The thermo electric plants work with imported petroleum which is not also something very positive since besides this resource being a non- renewable one, it is also imported from another country.

- Due to fires and natural disasters, many of these systems have gotten destroyed, therefore the repairs are expensive and the country can not afford these expenses.

- They use systems that already exist and have been there for a long time.

- The country has extremely unstable electrical generating stations to provide electricity, however they have plans for the future in order to improve this.

- No income to build the new plants and find other more viable energy sources for the country, however they are seeking a solution and a future plan.

OBJECTIVE B) Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of two contrasting energy sources.

Energy Sources used in Haiti

Diesel Oil (Non - renewable resource)

ADVANTAGES:

  • 1) Diesel fuel gives about 20 to 30% more fuel economy
  • 2) Diesel fuel can be made from any organic oil and can run in any diesel engine with little to no modifications. Good for the environment since it is not as toxic.
  • 3) A diesel motor lasts longer than a gasoline motor
  • 4) One of the most efficient energy sources since it is energy dense and delivers better fuel economy.
  • 5) No spark plugs
DISADVANTAGES
  • 1) Diesel has slowly increased the price and it is costing about the same as gasoline.
  • 2) Very low speed
  • 3) Diesels need regular maintenance. Constantly change the oil and air oil and fuel filters. Tanks need to be emptied manually so it is time consuming.
Diesel technology has started to be more popular and it has been improved. There has started to be more government pressure due to the low - emission diesel engines of cars, trucks etc. This cuts down

Hydroelectric (Replenishable resource since it is water based and needs from the energy of the sun in order to work)

ADVANTAGES:

  • 1) Does not depend on costs of uranium, oil, or other fuels
  • 2) No pollution
  • 3) It doesn't require many employees
  • 4) The set up can be of many sizes
  • 5) Stations can operate and run for long periods of time
  • 6) Reduces greenhouse emissions
  • 7) Low maintenance costs
  • 8) Can be used throughout the world
  • 9) It is renewable
  • 10) Hydroelectricity produces no gas emissions or waste.
DISADVANTAGES:

  • 1) Damns can take a long time to get build
  • 2) Expensive to build damns
  • 3) There can exist problems with floods which destroy houses and other environment resources
  • 4) Damns can alter the water levels

OBJECTIVE D: Explain how the energy resources used in your society changed over time

- Due to the economy of Haiti, this country has continuously been facing energy problems

- After the last hurricane which devastated the country, the power went off and the country was left totally destroyed.

- Around 30% of the earnings of the citizens was spent on candles, kerosene and timber which slowly killed all the trees in the nation.

NOW

- Foreign organizations are seeking for a change in Haitis energy sources and have created a plan for this country in order for them to have energy in the long run.

- The Green Energy Corps wants Haiti to be part of this and it consists on using only renewable and replenishable sources in order for the country to become more sustainable and eco friendly.

- The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) is using the sun to power health care all around Haiti and it is slowly being recognized and admired.

- More solar panels (replenishable source) are being built all around the country even though they are expensive.

BEFORE

- Haiti was one of the last countries to have electricity, and it used a lot of oil, however now it has been reducing its percentage.

- Needed oil for everything, and the hurricanes slowly killed their systems and their energy sources

- They received none or very little foreign help compared to now a days

- Very few people had electricity (fewer than now a days)

* The country is looking and seeking for alternative systems that wont get destroyed easily

* Looking for sustainable solutions to power up the country and provide a better life style to all the citizens.
